Welcome to our Monthly Newsletter.

The Montville Village Association brings people together to participate in a wide range of activities.

Our objectives are:

(1)   To represent the views of the people of Montville in local, State and Federal forums on matters associated with the progress and development of Montville and with the conservation of its heritage and environment.

(2)   To provide and support the social structures and networks necessary to maintain a healthy and vibrant community and promote community building in response to community needs.

(3)   To manage, and ensure fair and equitable community access to, the community facilities owned by the Association for and on behalf of the people of Montville; namely the Montville Village Hall and the Montville Sports and Recreation Grounds.

Feel free to share this newsletter and invite others to our events. If they receive the "Happenings" but don't receive the monthly email, they are not MVA members yet! Membership of the MVA is open to all with an interest in Montville, it is free and doesn't come with any commitments. The size of our membership, however, does impact our ability to speak for the Montville area, obtain grants to organize events, and lobby for things that are important to us. So invite your neighbours to join up!

We want to hear what you think. Please complete our survey before the end of this year!

Community Group Updates

Russell Family Park (RFP)

The rain received for October up to 9 am on the 31st was 68 mm. The Park was fortunate to

escape the hailstorm late in the afternoon of the 31st and little damage was received from the accompanying storm. The unofficial rain gauge reported a very welcome 55 mm of rain being received which will be accumulated into next month’s report. In general, the plants are all enjoying this early summer start as exemplified by the flowering small shrubby Sago Flower (Ozothamnus diosmifolius).

Platypus update – a recent report was received from another resident from the next door

Rangers that he had seen in their adjacent lagoon two Platypuses mating. The plot thickens,

but still no photo.

If anyone is interested in joining us, we are at the Park for one and a half hours from 7.00 am

every Sunday. For further information contact Eric Anderson – Mobile 0427 127 417.

The Group spent 50 hours working in the Park this month. We were able to finally mulch the

Rangebow Festival site that was planted in early August and are grateful for assistance from

John Davis, who provided his vehicle to transport the mulch. Apart from planting 13 plants

much of our time was spent with ongoing maintenance weeding.

This is Jack Woof who used to roll his cigarettes one handed as he carted passengers

Gaps to Fill

In writing the Montville Stories Series we knew there would be stories we missed or just didn’t have the time to research thoroughly and still meet deadlines. Then, only a couple of weeks after our last book in the series went to the printers, we were given a program for the 15th concert in the Montville Winter Concert Series held in September, 1998 in the Montville Village Hall. It had contained details about an upcoming Summer Concert Series for that year and information about a 16th Concert Series planned for 1999. After working on Montville’s history for 10 years, we were stunned to learn that the Montville Village Hall had hosted annual concert performances for around 20 years. We hadn’t even heard a whisper or passing reference to Montville Concerts.

We thought that we might start the process of filling in the gaps next year and plead/invite anyone who might have information on these to contact us. Some of the gaps are:

  • Montville Concerts

  • Montville players

  • Montville Choir

  • Montville Table Tennis Club

  • Montville Badminton Club

  • Montville Indoor Bowls Club

As we finish one of these stories, we will post it up on our webpage which you can find by googling Montville History Group.

As well, we plan to continue 2 series we began this year, This Old House and Montville Gems. If you know a house that might belong in the This Old House series or an interesting Montvillian whose life in Montville has been - well interesting, please let us know.

If you would like to take the lead in researching and writing one of these stories please contact Cate. The best way to contact the history group is through its email address; Montvillehistorygroup1@gmail.com.

Montville Demographics

Our recent AGM confirmed one thing at least. Montville is a microcosm of Australia. It has a balance of conservative and progressive views and the young feel disenfranchised. It is not accurate to simply label it as conservative any more than it is accurate to label Australia one way or another.

However, if you consider the broader definition of conservative, it would  be grossly inaccurate to describe the Montville Village Association (MVA) as conservative. It isn’t and never has been.

Historically, the MVA grew out of the Montville Village and Progressive Association which in turn resulted in the combination of the Montville School of Arts Committee, the Montville Rate Payers Association and the Montville Fruit Growers Association. These early bodies had to be, and were, aggressively progressive. Collectively, they fought for better roads, a post office, a school, a School of Arts Hall, a community World War One War Memorial, and the Golden Circle Cooperative. Not only did they lobby for these changes, they worked for them and funded them either directly or in the case of Golden Circle by encouraging local farmers to be shareholders in the cooperative.

The Montville Village and Progress Association was formed in the 1970s to foster and manage growth in the community. It quickly attracted a number of developers who initially took into consideration the amenity of Montville in their proposed developments. However, a number of later developments were primarily driven by commercial interests and the ‘progress association’ suffered from a number of conflicts of interest between community interests and commercial interests.

As a result, the Montville Village and Progress Association morphed into the MVA and this allowed it to prioritise the management side of development in the community’s interest. In this regard, the MVA has become a true community organisation, doing its best to engage with its community, conducting a range of events to recognise milestones in Australia’s history and to celebrate community health and wellbeing. Australia Day celebrations, ANZAC Day ceremonies, Easter and Christmas services, a community market and regular community events like dinners, quiz night, musical and drama performances all contribute to role in the community. The MVA has had to be pro-active in adapting to the needs of a changing community demographic and, if it has been a bit slow to do this at times, it still endeavours to identify and meet the community’s changing needs.

It is however undeniably conservative in one particular aspect. It remains fiercely democratic in the way it conducts its business and openly accountable in how it reports back to the community. At times, as in any democratic governance, differences of opinion will lead to lively debate. These differences are occasionally driven by ideological positions just like they are on the national stage and can result in decisions that do not truly represent community aspirations. That is the imperfection of democracy. It does not, however, mean that the MVA is unduly conservative as an organisation. In fact, its continuing relevance depends on it being progressive as the Montville Community changes.

Garage Sale Trail (9-10 and 16-17 November)

Garage Sale Trail, one of Australia’s biggest annual sustainability events, is coming to the Sunshine Coast this November. It’s a great way to raise money, bring your community together and divert usable items from landfill.

In 2023, the average community group made $940 hosting a garage sale or market. Groups also use Garage Sale Trail as a way to recruit new members and generate positive media and awareness about the work they do.

This year, two weekends of garage sales will be held around the Sunshine Coast and the nation on 9-10 and 16-17 November. It’s free to register and Garage Sale Trail provides participants with a host of tips, tools and free promotional materials to support success.

Volunteering Opportunities:

Australia Day Celebrations, 26 January 2025

With a small majority of members voting to keep celebrating Australia Day on January 26th, we are now looking for volunteers to help us out!

Wildlife Road Casualties

If you hit an animal, and don't know what to do, make sure you call one of our local wildlife volunteers. Program the number in your phone, and let your employees know who to contact!

Please, don't let these beautiful animals suffer; slow down, slow down, slow down...... and rethink the need for fencing your property as it limits their escape routes from the road.

Palmwoods Monville Road Update

The Department of Transport and Main Roads' (TMR) will be undertaking further landslip repair works on Palmwoods-Montville Road, Montville.

Due to the narrow road and terrain, and the location of the deteriorated site, the full road closure currently implemented will need to be extended an additional seven weeks to accommodate the machinery needed to complete these repairs.

The road is now expected to be fully reopened by early December 2024, weather and construction schedule permitting.

Please see the attached flyer for more information.

The Palmwoods—Montville Road repairs are being undertaken as part of a broader program of rectification work that includes more than 200 batter slope/embankment sites damaged by the 2022 flooding events in North Coast Region.

The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

If you require additional information about the project, please contact the GRC Civil Community Team on 0488 157 094.
